Frustration Management: Combat Your Negative Emotions

When feelings of bitterness, anger, and annoyance build up, you may start to feel overwhelmed. Frustration can be an intense feeling that can cause blood pressure and stress to increase. Although being frustrated is normal, negative emotions can escalate quickly. As such, it's important to develop healthy strategies to combat overburdening emotions to boost mental and physical wellbeing. Here are some ways you can manage feelings of aggravation and irritation:

Divert Focus From Problems to Solutions

Identify the source of your frustration. What is making you feel so distraught? What is causing you stress or anger? Create a clear, focused definition of what the issue at hand is. Once you have figured out the cause, break down the issue into smaller segments, focusing on each issue one at a time. This way, you won’t overwhelm or overburden yourself with a tantalizing issue. Once you have carefully discerned the different parts of the issue as a whole, shed focus on the most important one. By doing this, figuring out solutions to the subsequent issues will be much easier. Brainstorm a list of positives and negatives of each problem and pick the most viable option. Your next step will be to simply take action. Remember, it’s normal for solutions to fail, even after careful planning. If your action does not produce tangible results, then adjust your plan and learn from your mistakes. Take any failure as a moment of self-growth.

Practice Mindfulness

Mindfulness, in short, means focusing on the present. When you are mindful, you are away from your current state, and not worrying about the past or the future. Practicing this everyday is key to living a far more joyful and exuberant life. In fact, being mindful can improve mental health as it wards away negative feelings. When you take these steps, your wellbeing will overall be ameliorated, whether it be mental or physical health. There are many ways to practice this such as breathing and focusing on your five senses.

Be Self-Compassionate

To be self-compassionate means to give yourself grace and not scrutinize yourself. You may feel anger or frustration towards something, so allow yourself to feel those powerful emotions.

Write Down Your Feelings

Writing down your emotions may help to ease your frustrations. When you write, you are able to express your raw, innermost thoughts, making it more effective for you to process what you are feeling. When you physically put pen to paper, you may be able to garner a new perspective. Writing is a powerful vessel for feelings that can function as a moment of self-reflection.

Talk To Someone You Trust

Never be afraid to voice your feelings to someone you trust. If you are feeling worried or stressed, getting support from people may allow you to feel empowered. Furthermore, by having someone listen to your frustrations, you will be able to see the issue in a new perspective. Opening up to someone who may listen is a great way to move forward and ignite feelings of hopefulness.
